Secondary and tertiary students gained a unique insight into Defence careers during a Defence Work Experience Program (DWEP) hosted at RAAF Base Richmond from 23 to 25 June 2026.
The three-day program provided participants with hands-on exposure to a broad range of career pathways across the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and Australian Public Service (APS), helping students make informed decisions about their future education and employment opportunities.
Throughout the program, students engaged with Defence personnel and explored a variety of specialist roles, including technical trades, ground support, engineering, aircraft maintenance, logistics, physical training instruction, medical services, and fire and rescue.
The Defence Work Experience Program is designed to give young Australians practical insight into the diverse careers available within Defence. By showcasing Defence's people, capabilities and culture, the program helps students better understand the skills, qualifications and opportunities associated with service and APS careers.
The experience included demonstrations, workplace visits and interactions with personnel working across the Air Force's operational and support functions. Students gained valuable insight into how different professions work together to deliver Defence capability and support national security outcomes.
Programs such as the Richmond placement also contribute to Defence's broader commitment to developing Australia's future workforce by increasing awareness of careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), trades, health and professional services.
The Defence Work Experience Program operates nationally and provides opportunities for more than 3,000 students each year. Programs are delivered in partnership with Defence Groups and Services and are designed to showcase the breadth of opportunities available across the organisation.
By providing real-world experiences in both military and civilian environments, DWEP supports young Australians to enhance confidence, develop workplace awareness and explore future career possibilities while strengthening Defence's connection with local communities.
